France has passed a law banning plastic cups, plates and cutlery that aren’t made from biologically sourced materials.
Taking effect in 2020, the law stipulates that disposable dishes can no longer be petroleum-based. The ban is part of the country’s Energy Transition for Green Growth, a plan for France to combat climate change, the Independent reports.
While some ecologists support the sustainability effort, the law’s opponents include people who believe it infringes on the European Union’s free movement of goods.
